Popular pro assessed a one-stroke penalty at Masters on Saturday

Thirteen days ago, Min Woo Lee was basking in the glow of his breakthrough PGA Tour win. Saturday at the 89th Masters Tournament, Lee was popped for a one-stroke penalty.

The big-hitting Lee opened 71-72 to make the cut by three shots but posted 77 in Saturday’s third round. He made the turn in even par but his round got sideways on the second nine with bogeys on Nos. 10, 11, 13, 14 and 17. He had just one birdie and was 1 over on the par 5s.

The 13th hole was the critical one for Lee.

Why was Min Woo Lee given a penatly at the Masters?

According to a statement released by the club:

On hole No. 13, Min Woo Lee asked for assistance after his ball moved on the fairway. It was determined his actions near the ball did cause it to move and one penalty stroke was added to his score under Rule 9.4b.

Lee is playing his fourth Masters. He finished in the top 25 in 2022 and 2024. In 13 career rounds at Augusta National, he’s broken 70 just once.
