Mitchell boys tennis digs deep to win two contests at Huron
Apr. 17—HURON — With one in convincing fashion and the other as close as could be, Mitchell High School boys tennis was a winner of two duals in a triangular Thursday.
Mitchell cruised 9-0 past host Huron before holding on for a 5-4 win over Aberdeen Central, improving the Kernels' record to 5-2 on the season and 3-2 in Eastern South Dakota Conference play.
Mitchell scored wins across the board against Huron, sweeping singles and doubles play. No. 1 singles player Matthew Mauszycki won the closest match in singles play over Huron's Matthew Thin, a 10-9(6) win in a match tiebreak. Asher Dannenbring earned a 10-2 win in his No. 3 singles match, while Luke Jerke and Dawson Adams won at Flight 2 and Flight 5, respectively, by a 10-4 margin.
In doubles play, Mitchell's Mauszycki and Jerke won the Flight 1 match 10-7, with a 10-5 win to Dannenbring and Adams at Flight 3 and Cooper Star and Sutton Thompson winning 10-4 at Flight 2.
Against Aberdeen Central, Mitchell won four of the six singles matches. Thompson was a 10-0 winner in his No. 6 singles contest, while Jerke won 10-2 at No. 2 singles. Dannenbring earned a 10-8 win at Flight 3 and Mauszycki won 10-9(6) for his second No. 1 singles win of the day in a match tiebreak.
The Golden Eagles took two of the three doubles matches, including both at Flight 1 and Flight 2, with Aberdeen's AJ Prehn and Gustavo Carrara winning at Flight 1 over Matthew Mauszycki and Luke Jerke by a score of 10-9(8), while Dawson Pederson and Mason Ligon won 10-8 over Cooper Star and Thompson at Flight 2. Dannenbring and Adams picked up a 10-5 for Mitchell at No. 3 doubles, assuring the Kernels of the team victory.
Mitchell will be back in action on Monday, April 21, hosting Sioux Falls Christian at 1 p.m. and Lennox at 3:30 p.m. at Hitchcock Park.
