Jacket tennis takes round one from Cavs

The first Brick City rivalry contest of the spring sports season took place Tuesday afternoon, as Southern Lee made the short drive up the road to visit Lee County in a Sandhills Athletic Conference men’s tennis match.

The victory went to the Yellow Jackets, who won their third match of the season after an 0-2 start, taking all six singles matches and two of the three doubles to earn a 8-1 victory over the Cavaliers.

Southern, which has three freshmen and three sophomores on its eight-player roster for this spring, is still seeking its first victory after three matches.

The teams played single-set matches, with the first player or doubles team to get to eight games won getting the victory. In the singles, going down the lineup, Nathan Jones beat Kai Wilby 8-3, Finley Benton defeated Brayden Shuey by the same score, Ben Klug topped Kaiden Postawko 8-2, Hunter Jackson scored an 8-2 win over Laith Jamil, Jayden Gibbs won 8-1 against Gustavo Rivera, and Edgar Valenzuela scored an 8-1 win over Ethan Lawrence.

Wilby and Shuey got a win for Southern at No. 1 doubles, but Lee’s Carter Osborne and Jason Alvarez won 8-3 at second doubles, with Liam Kelly and Jude Mcelreath scoring an 8-0 shutout at No. 3.

The Yellow Jackets began their season with two losses to the Moore County powerhouses Pinecrest and Union Pines, but bounced back last week with 6-3 wins over Richmond and Harnett Central. The score against Harnett Central was somewhat deceiving in that Lee used only one player from the starting singles lineup in the doubles, which the Trojans swept.

The Yellow Jackets will host Union Pines today, while the Cavaliers will be visiting Richmond.
