Boys tennis roundup: Willmar loses its home opener to Redwood Valley

Apr. 10—WILLMAR — The Willmar boys tennis team opened the season with a 6-1 home loss to Redwood Valley on Thursday.

Willmar's lone win came at No. 2 singles. Junior Carter Newberg went three sets with Redwood Valley's Kanyon Hicks, with Newberg winning the first set and Hicks tying the match in the second. Newberg claimed the third set for the 6-2, 5-7, 10-5 victory.

Another three-set match took place at No. 3 singles. Redwood Valley's Yzykiel Rendon came back from a first-set loss to beat Willmar's Samuel Loerzel, 6-7, 6-1, 10-5.

Willmar faces Redwood Valley and Montevideo at the Redwood Valley triangular at 10 a.m. Saturday in Redwood Falls.

New London-Spicer swept doubles play in a win over Yellow Medicine East at New London.

The Wildcats' Owen Lee and Vaughn Hanson won at No. 1 doubles. The No. 2 match went to Lucas Christopherson and Isaac Palmer. Ethan Wenke and Coleman Davis completed the sweep by winning at No. 3.

In singles play, NLS got wins from Jowell Gamez and Jameson Dragt at Nos. 1 and 4. The Sting's Karter Canatsey and Liam Hadfield were winners at Nos. 2 and 3 singles.

NLS heads to Benson at 4:30 p.m. Tuesday. YME competes in a doubles tournament at Worthington at 9 a.m. Saturday.

Minnewaska swept the doubles matches en route to victory against Benson at Glenwood.

Marshall Kopp and Xavier Johnson beat Brandon Sondag and Bence Banoczky 6-1, 6-3 at No. 1 doubles. Riley Thorfinnson and Tyler Kohn defeated Carson Petrak and Joey Wilcox 6-2, 6-2 at No. 2 doubles. Easton Palmer and Aidric Vold beat Brooks Groinus and Cian Klucas 6-1, 6-1 at No. 3 doubles.

Tenzin Dahl, Drew Bleick and Carter LeClair at Nos. 1, 2 and 3 singles also won for the Lakers.

Benson's sole point came at No. 4 singles behind a 7-6 (4), 6-2 victory by Andrea Beqaraj over Carson Beyer.

Sartell secured a non-conference win over host Litchfield.

In singles play, the Dragons' Lincoln Dille beat the Sabres' Jack Michaud 7-5, 6-1 to claim the win at No. 1. Litchfield's Isaac Elwell and Grayson Swenson beat Collin Rankin and Will Gerads 4-6, 6-4, 6-4 to win at No. 2 doubles.

The Dragons compete at the St. James tournament at 9 a.m. Saturday. Winona Cotter and Fairmont are also slated to compete.
