Alex de Minaur Admits He’d Add Roger Federer in His Team Despite Receiving a Beating
Australian tennis star Alex de Minaur has never hidden his admiration for the legends of the sport, and when asked recently who he would choose to add to his team, he didn’t hesitate: Roger Federer. In a candid interview at the Mutua Madrid Open, Alex pondered over who would be the best addition to his current coaching team.
"I think maybe Roger," De Minaur said. "He's one of the people I watched on TV when I was growing up. I always admired him. I've always loved the way he played, how easy he made tennis look."
For De Minaur, who has steadily been climbing the ATP rankings with his gritty style and lightning-fast footwork, Federer has long been a source of inspiration. De Minaur’s admiration isn't just about Federer's legendary record or titles — it’s about the artistry, calm, and grace the Swiss maestro brought to the court.
De Minaur had the rare opportunity to face Federer on one of the biggest stages, the final in Basel — Federer’s home tournament. Though De Minaur admits that the match was a learning experience where he was thoroughly outplayed(6-2, 6-2), he cherishes it as one of the highlights of his career.
"I had the great opportunity to play against him in a final in Basel- he really schooled me there, but even so I enjoyed that moment a lot," De Minaur reflected with a smile.
Alex De Minaur's choice of adding Federer to his team does not come as a surprise. In one of his older press conferences, he said that every tennis player aspires to be like Federer in one way or another. He also said that maybe when Federer is 45 years old he might have a chance to avenge his loss in Basel.
The idea of Federer taking on a coaching role is something tennis fans have often dreamed about, and De Minaur’s recent comments reignite that idea. With his tactical mind, experience, and calm presence, Federer would undoubtedly make an incredible addition to any young player's team — and De Minaur’s fighting spirit and recent improvement would make him an ideal candidate.
As De Minaur continues to carve his place among the world’s elite players, it’s clear that the influence of Federer — a man who made tennis look effortless — still lingers fresh in his mind, pushing him to aspire for greatness with every match he plays.
