What would fans do get to Augusta National for the Masters? A survey says almost anything

What would golf fans do to be at the Augusta National Golf during the week of the Masters Tournament, perhaps the hardest ticket in sports?

According to a survey by National Club Golfer, fans wouldn’t sacrifice their firstborn. But they might miss the birth. They might also delay their wedding plans.

And if you’ve got a date with a golf fan but he gets a chance to attend the tournament, there’s more than a two-thirds chance he will cancel.

Masters survey results don’t surprise website editor

Steve Carroll, Club Golf Editor at National Club Golfer, said the results of the website’s survey don’t surprise him.

“Augusta National is a place every golfer dreams of visiting,” Carroll said in a news release on the results of the survey. “We’ve all grown up seeing the pristine green fairways, the blooming azaleas, and the peaceful Georgia pines. But even we were surprised at the lengths people would go to for a ticket to The Masters. Postponing a wedding? Missing the birth of a child? It just shows how much of a bucket-list event this is for golf fans.”

Nearly 70 percent of golf fans said they would skip a friend's wedding if it conflicted with a chance to go to the Masters Tournament.

What would golf fans sacrifice?

Here are the survey results, based on interviews with “hundreds of golf fans,” according to the website.

  • Nearly a third (29.7 percent) said they would put off their wedding date if they had a chance to go to the Masters.
  • More than 12 percent said they’d skip the birth of a child.
  • More than 70 percent (71.3) said they’d skip a friend’s wedding.
  • And it’s more than just getting a Masters ticket. Nearly 70 percent (68.5) said they’d cancel a date just to watch a close finish on TV.

Carroll had some advice for people considering dating a hardcore golf fan.

“Expect to make some sacrifices, or maybe just don’t date one at all,” he said.

What else would golf fans give up for the Masters?

Makes us wonder what other sacrifices one would make?

  • Would a Florida Gator fan with a ticket to Monday’s national championship game against Houston in San Antonio have traded it for a Masters ticket?
  • If a fan had the choice between throwing out the first pitch at their favorite Major League Baseball team’s home field, say, Yankee Stadium or Fenway Park, would they swap that for a Masters ticket?
  • If a Jacksonville Jaguars fan was offered the chance to go to the podium in Green Bay on April 24 to announce the team’s first-round draft pick, would a ticket to the Masters been enough to pass?

If someone is willing to miss the birth of their first child, almost anything is possible.
