Randy Brown vs. Nicolas Dalby UFC on ESPN 66 preview
Brown (19-6 MMA, 13-6 UFC) will look to erase the sting of a split decision loss to Bryan Battle in his last outing at UFC 310. Prior to that setback, Brown won three straight fights: a unanimous decision over Wellington Turman, a first-round knockout of Muslim Salikhov, and a unanimous decision over Elizeu Zaleski. … Dalby (23-5-1 MMA, 7-4-1 UFC) also suffered a split decision heartbreaker in his last outing. In June, Dalby wound up on the wrong side of two cards agains Rinat Fakhretdinov, a results that snapped a four-fight winning streak that included a Fight of the Night against Gabriel Bonfim.
Randy Brown vs. Nicolas Dalby UFC on ESPN 66 expert pick, prediction
Filling out the main card is a potential welterweight war between Brown and Dalby. I'm not sure it's intentional matchmaking, but it's slightly ironic considering both men (particularly Dalby) are coming off of controversial fights that could've easily gone their way.
Although it looks like an easy pick for Brown on paper, the American – despite his clear skills – has a penchant for making fights a lot closer than they need to be. Whether it's his propensity to be pushed into the clinch or his sometimes suspect durability, I tend to have a hard time being confident in Brown, regardless of whether or not I pick him.
Dalby may be 40 years old and coming off an injury, but the "Danish Dynamite" has looked nothing short of a Danish dynamo since making a resurgent second stint in the UFC. Add in the fact that Dalby is the more active clinch fighter who has a knack for finding knees (something that has surprisingly troubled the tall Brown in his UFC tenure), and I believe that the Dane is a live dog.
A brown knockout early wouldn't shock me, but I'll take a flier on Dalby to survive some rough waters and pull away down the stretch, possibly getting a finish late.
The pick is Dalby by decision.
