As long ago as 2016, Jilly Cooper had been toying with the idea of setting her next book in the world of football. “And then,” she says, “I went out to lunch and found myself sitting next to Sir Alex Ferguson. I was a bit scared but he was so lovely and so funny. We laughed and laughed and so I thought, ‘Well, why not?’ And that’s when I began my research.”
